Task 7: Reviewing first-aid arrangements 
Following the accident, the owner has asked you to review first-aid arrangements at the café. What would you consider in your review to determine if first-aid provision is realistic and proportionate at the café? (15) 
Notes: You do not need to itemize specific first-aid equipment. You should support your answer, where applicable, using relevant information from the scenario.  

Answer:

To determine if first-aid provision is realistic and proportionate at the café, I would consider
the following points:

Size and layout of the café: The number of workers and customers in the café and the

layout of the café would influence the level of first-aid provision required. A larger café with

more seating areas would require more first-aid equipment than a smaller one.

Nature of the business: The type of business the café operates would also affect the level

of first-aid provision. For instance, a café that specializes in serving hot beverages would

require more burn kits and first-aid equipment.

Types of hazards: The café would need to assess the types of hazards that exist,

including slip, trip, and fall hazards, burns from hot drinks or equipment, and cuts from

sharp knives or broken glass.

Availability of first-aid equipment: The café would need to ensure that there is sufficient

first-aid equipment available, including a fully stocked first-aid kit, burn kits, and eyewash

stations.

Adequate training: The café would need to ensure that all workers are adequately trained

in first-aid and know what to do in the event of an emergency.

Regular review: The café would need to conduct regular reviews of its first-aid

arrangements to ensure they are up-to-date and effective.

Response times: The café would need to ensure that it has a plan in place to quickly

respond to an emergency and that all workers know what to do in the event of an

emergency.

SM's management style: The café would need to assess the SM's management style and

ensure that it is not compromising the safety of the workers and customers. If necessary,

are not causing a hazard.

Task 8: Reactive monitoring methods 
Comment on the reactive (lagging) monitoring measures that could be put in place by the café. (10) Note: You should support your answer, where applicable, using relevant information from the scenario. 

Answer:

Following lagging monitoring measures could be put in place by the café management at the workplace:

• There are number of accidents reported due to the tripping from the step while accessing the second sitting area inside the café. Date compiled from this could be used as lagging monitoring measure

• All the ill health reported at the café after the hiring of shift manager could also be used as lagging monitoring measure

• All the reported near misses and data compiled using this reporting could be reviewed for monitoring purposes

• All the surveys conducted for employees satisfaction could be used as monitoring measure

• Number of workers worked per hour without any lost time injury in also a lagging monitoring measure

• Workers were often complaining about the workplace health and safety and this data could also be used for this purpose

• Analyzing absence and sickness data

• Analysis of data about accidents occurred at the workplace

• Finding out patterns and trends from accident data

• Calculating the cost of claims and productive time loss due to tripping of the workers from the step could also be used as lagging monitoring measure at the workplace

• Layout changes to enter in second sitting area to avoid the repetition of these incidents at the café could also a lagging monitoring measure

• Despite past incidents, no first aiders was arranged at the café by the management

• There was  no accident reporting mechanism was put in place so there was no accident investigation record available which could be a lagging monitoring measure

• Poor accident reporting system of the café management is also a reactive monitoring measure.
